The Galaxy Watch 5 series which consists of the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has been released. However, while the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is only available in one size, the Galaxy Watch 5 like older Galaxy watches is available in two sizes; 40mm and 44mm. Samsung obviously acknowledges we all have different wrist sizes which is why you have two sizes to choose from. In this post, we’ll take a look at the differences between the Galaxy Watch 5 40mm vs 44mm to make it easier for you to make the right choice. But before that, let’s talk about what’s new to the Galaxy Watch 5.
What’s New to Galaxy Watch 5?
- Galaxy Watch 5 has a stronger sapphire glass screen
- Galaxy Watch 5 has a longer battery life & fast charging
- Galaxy Watch 5 welcomes a temperature sensor
- The back is flatter
The Galaxy Watch 5 has a stronger build than the Galaxy Watch 4. While both watches have an Armor aluminum case paired with silicone bands, the Galaxy Watch 5 has a sapphire glass screen which is more durable and highly resistant to scratches than Corning Gorilla Glass DX used on its predecessor. In fact, I had to buy a screen guard for my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to prevent the screen from scratching.
Secondly, the Galaxy Watch 5 has a longer battery life than the Galaxy Watch 4. With a bigger battery capacity, while maintaining the same footprint, Samsung says the Galaxy Watch 5 has up to 50hrs battery life compared to about 40hrs with the Galaxy Watch 4. That’s a 20% increase in battery life. Moreover, the Galaxy Watch 5 will take lesser time to charge. Samsung says up to 45% in 39 minutes of charge, thanks to the fast charging technology.
Thirdly, the Galaxy Watch 5 welcomes a skin temperature sensor that will enable the watch to measure skin temperature. This will be activated in the future.
The back of the Galaxy Watch 5 has also been redesigned, its flatter. This will allow for better contact with the skin and as a result, will improve accuracy tracking.
These are the new features that you get with the Galaxy Watch 5. Beyond these, it’s the same design and features as the Galaxy Watch 4. You get a super AMOLED display, 16GB storage, microphone, speaker, and access to your favorite Wear OS apps like Spotify, YouTube Music, Google maps, Google Assistant, and even more.

Difference Between Galaxy Watch 5 40mm and 44mm
The Galaxy Watch 5 comes in two sizes, 40mm and 44mm, and these two are available in Bluetooth and LTE models. The LTE model is a standalone smartwatch that can make calls and send messages without connecting to a smartphone.
The 40mm and 44mm units of the Galaxy Watch 5 are the same in all ramifications but differ in sizes, prices, available colors and battery life.
- The 40mm is more compact
- The 44mm unit has a bigger display size
- The available colors differ
- The 44mm unit has a little longer battery life
- The 40mm unit is cheaper
In terms of size, the 40mm is a more compact smartwatch. It also weighs a little less than 44mm. Nonetheless, both watches are some of the lightest and most compact smartwatches.
The display size is also different. While the 40mm has 1.2 inches display size, the 44mm has a 1.4 inches display size.
In terms of available colors, the 40mm unit is available in black, silver, and pink-gold. Meanwhile, the 44mm size is available in black, silver, and blue colors.
Just like I have witnessed with older Galaxy Watches, the bigger size always has a longer battery life, thanks to its bigger battery capacity. In this case, while you can get up to 50hrs of battery life with the 44mm size, it’s a little less than that with the 40mm size.
Because the 44mm unit has a bigger display size and longer battery life, it cost $20 more. The 40mm Bluetooth model is priced at $280, it’s $300 for the 44mm unit. The 40mm LTE unit is priced at $330 while the 44mm LTE is priced at $350.
40mm or 44mm – Which is the Right Size For You?
Now that you know the differences between the 40mm and 44mm sizes of the Galaxy Watch 5, the next action is to decide which size is right for you.
I recommend the smaller 40mm unit for women and the 44mm unit for men. You can also measure your wrist size with a tape or meter rule. For instance, my wrist size is 45mm, so I will go with the 44mm unit. In fact, I actually ordered the 44mm unit.
