Design

The Garmin Forerunner 45 and 45S aren’t the most stylish smartwatches out there, however these two come in a quite stylish design that no doubt leaves the both with decent appearance which isn’t bad for entry level smartwatches.

The difference between the 45 and 45S is that the later is the smaller model, measuring 39.5 inches wide compared to the 45 which measures 42mm. Moreover, the slimmer bezel of the 45S makes it a bit more stylish than the 45. These attributes suggests that the 45S is a nicer fit for women, while the 45 is a great choice for men.

Both 45 and 45S are lightweight – 32 and 36 grams respectively which means you might just forget you wearing any of these.

Just like other Garmin smartwatches, both the 45 and 45S are powered by the colored Transflective memory-in-display (MIP) which is very easy to view under sunlight. The 1.04 inch screen isn’t touchscreen, but don’t worry you have 5 buttons to help you navigate the tiny display effortlessly.

You can also customize watch faces by simply choosing one from the Connect store and as well the straps can be swapped. Just in case you don’t like the silicone straps that come in the box.

From the design, it’s a pretty nice job, slim and lightweight which is what a sport watch should be.

Long Battery Life

Going by the manufacturer’s claim, it seems we’ve another sets of smartwatches with long lasting battery life. The 45/45S are both stated to last up to 7 days on smartwatch mode, while with the GPS active, it’s about 13 hours. I’d say quite impressive, these are great choices for fitness enthusiasts especially those that engage in longer durational activities.

Waterproof Rating

Both the 45 and 45S are rated 5ATM which means these two are water resistant up to 50 meters. This is great and if you like to wear your watch to the pool, it shouldn’t be a problem. You can wear either of these two to the pool or perhaps to the ocean.

Activity/Fitness Tracking

For a renowned name in the fitness tracking business, you should expect nothing but another round of great quality. The 45 and 45S being fitness smartwatches come with a heart rate sensor, an accelerometer with inbuilt multi satellite support that enables these devices to track quite a number of activities.

The 45/45S can track your heart rate, distance, calories, pace, including outdoor activities. There’s the Garmin Coach which will provide you with professional guide that includes a plan that helps you achieve even more fitness goals plus support for a number of sport modes which includes running, yoga, and cycling.

There’s now also support for all-day stress monitoring via the body battery energy monitor that tracks your stress, activity and relaxation level helping you manage stress levels.

Notifications

The 45 and 45S are both equipped to keep you connected to what matters to you. They are compatible with Android and iOS devices which when successfully paired together will beam notifications from your phone to the watch helping stay connected to all that matters.

Other features integrated include the find my phone feature and the ability to control music on your phone. Another new feature, is the incident detection capability during select activities.

The 45/45S can detect incidents and will automatically send both a message and your location to a predefined emergency contact. This off course will have to be activated via a connected phone from the Garmin connect App.

Unfortunately, both the 45 and 45S lack NFC, so you won’t be able to make payments on the go with these two.

Pros
Cons
  • Little onboard storage.
  • Lacks NFC.
