What’s the Difference?

Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch Features Compared

  1. Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch: Design

  2. While the Mi Watch takes inspiration from the Apple Watch square shape, the Gen 5 retains its regular circular shape. This off course results in the Mi watch having a larger 1.78 inch display compared to the 1.28 inch of the Gen 5. That means, you get to see more at a glance on the Mi watch than on the Gen 5.

AMOLED powers the display on both device as well as Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the screen which translates to two sturdily built durable devices. But while aluminum is used for the Mi Watch case, stainless steel is used for the Gen 5 which makes the later heavier than the Mi watch.

In other words, the Mi Watch being lightweight is a more comfortable wear all day longs. And that extends to also being a better wear for sport activities than the Gen 5.

Although, the Gen 5 with classic watch appearance of a traditional watch is a more befitting wear for official outings, even though the Mi Watch will also make a perfect fit for formal occasions.

  3. Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch: Cellular Connectivity

  4. The Mi Watch comes with e-SIM which supports and enables cellular connectivity up to 4G LTE which the Gen 5 lacks. This makes the Mi Watch a standalone smartwatch that allows you to make and receive calls directly from the device.

Although, the Gen 5 with microphone and loudspeaker will allow you receive calls, and as well initiate calls via Bluetooth calling which is supported on both Android and iOS devices. This doesn’t necessarily make it a standalone smartwatch, but it bring a significant level of convenience.

  5. Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch: Fitness Tracking

  6. Both watches are well equipped to track your active life comprehensively, each comes with heart rate sensor, accelerometer and inbuilt GPS which enables any of these two to track your heart rate, calories, sleep, and outdoor activities such as locations and routes.

However, the Mi Watch with Pulse OX sensor will be able to track blood oxygen which isn’t available on the Gen 5. Moreover, it’s able to auto detect and track up to 10 activities which is more than the 7 activities the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 can auto track.

Although both watches run on the Wear OS platform, the Mi Watch runs on Xiaomi custom MIUI on top of Wear OS. It is the first smartwatch to run a custom skin on top of Google’s smartwatch operating system.

There are over 40 apps baked into the Mi watch, including lighter versions of popular MIUI apps like Tasks, Recorder, Notes, Mi Home and more. MIUI For Watch also has its own app store which is now accessible to third-party developers.

  7. Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch: Battery Life

The Mi Watch has one of the biggest battery capacity I’ve seen thus far, and while this doesn’t translate to the longest battery life, it does ensure it’ll last a little longer than the Gen 5.

While the Mi Watch has been tested to last up to 36 hours with continuous cellular connectivity, the Gen 5 will last just over a day with mixed usage.

Fossil Gen 5 vs Xiaomi MI Watch: Which is Better?

These two smartwatches no doubt represent the very best on the Wear OS lineup and some of the best on the market currently – premium designs and outstanding features. But I think the Mi watch is better smartwatch, it’s a more comprehensive smartwatch.

The Mi watch cost about $185 in China which far less than the $300 Gen 5, yet great quality with standalone capabilities and a slight longer battery life which makes it more comprehensive smartwatch.

However, the Mi Watch running on a custom MIUI on top of Wear OS has limited access to the Google Play store, and that means you get limited access to your favorite apps, unlike the Gen 5 which gives you full access. Although, 40 apps have been included with rooms for more by developers.

Our Pick

The Xiaomi Mi Watch with a spectacular design and being a standalone smartwatch with a quite impressive long battery life is our preferred choice.
