The Apple Watch Series 2 up to 8 all have inbuilt GPS. This means that when you go for an outdoor workout, the watch will be able to map your routes and locations without your iPhone. I own the Apple Watch Series 7 which I have been using to map my routes when I go for an outdoor workout. In this post, I’ll discuss tracking your routes and locations with Apple Watch.
How to Track Your Routes With Apple Watch
To track your routes with the Apple Watch, you need to start an outdoor run workout.
Navigate to the workout app on the watch, locate Outdoor Run, and select it. The exercise will start after the count of 3. The Apple Watch will tell you your pace for every kilometer you reach. It’s advised you connect a Bluetooth headphone to get the best audio experience.
After a workout, you can end the workout by swiping right and tap on the cancel icon. This will end the exercise and show a summary of your workout for that particular exercise.
Right on the watch, you will see the following;
- Total distance.
- Average pace.
- Average cadence.
- Active and total calories.
- Average heart rate and your heart rate range.
- Elevation gain.
To see full details and your routes, you will need to visit the fitness app on your iPhone. Open the Fitness app and select the workout you want to view from the list. Scroll down to map and select it. You should see the mapped route and location data for this workout.
GPS Tracking Accuracy – Watch 7 vs Band 4 Pro
To check the GPS tracking accuracy of the Apple Watch Series 7, I wore it alongside the Band 4 Pro. The Huawei Band 4 Pro has been with me for over 2 years now, and I have compared it with several high-end smartwatches, and it has shown to be a very consistent tracker.
So from the results, the Band 4 Pro had very similar results to the Apple Watch Series 7 except for slight discrepancies.
Conclusion
Bottom line, the Apple Watch Series 7 with its inbuilt GPS will map your routes when you wear it for an outdoor workout activity. Compared to the Galaxy Watch 4, Versa 3, and Band 4 Pro, it’s also a very consistent outdoor activity tracker.
